When Do I Celebrate Ascension?

The information in this page is current as of the modification date below.

For Latin Catholics in the United States of America, determining whether Ascension is celebrated on Thursday or Sunday, and thus whether one needs to go to Mass on the Thursday, can be a difficult business. I hope to help sort out the confusion here.

In the USA, Ascension is transferred to the Seventh Sunday of Easter, except in the following ecclesiastical provinces:

  • Boston (MA, ME, NH, VT)
  • Hartford (CT, RI)
  • New York (NY)
  • Newark (NJ)
  • Omaha (NE)
  • Philadelphia (PA)

Ascension is celebrated on the Thursday following the Sixth Sunday of Easter in the dioceses listed below. If you are physically present in one of them on said Thursday, whether because you live there or you are traveling there, you must attend Mass on that day:

  • Diocese of Burlington, VT
  • Diocese of Fall River, MA
  • Diocese of Manchester, NH
